Character Information Name: Alex Summers Age: 24 Fandom: Marvel Point In Fandom Taken From: After the War of Kings storyline Job/Title in Fandom: Altruism Team Leader; formerly one of the X-Men and Captain of the Starjammer. Alignment: Good
History: Alex Summers was the second of two sons born to Major Christopher Summers, a test pilot for the U.S. Air Force, and his wife Katherine.
While Scott was in the hospital recovering from his injuries, Alex was adopted by the Blanding family and went to live with them in Hawaii. The Blanding family, while good to Alex, continually tried to get him to act and behave as their son Todd had before being killed. In this regard, Alex did his best to please them, but in doing so had difficulties developing a sense of self, as he was always encouraged to be someone else. As a result of this, Alex still struggles at times with self-doubt, and is endlessly comparing himself to Scott.
Growing up, Alex spent a lot of time on the beach and enjoyed surfing. He got good grades in school, and was fairly popular in school, but never quite felt content. As if something was missing in his life. When his mutation first developed, it was a tragic occurrence. The same bully that was responsible for the death of Todd assaulted Alex, and in trying to defend himself Alex released his powers for the first time and incinerated the boy. This violent episode, however, is unknown to Alex as mental block was put on him to forget the incident.
It was not until Alex traveled to the continental United States to go to college that he crossed paths with the original X-Men. Despite not having seen his brother in years, Alex felt at once an odd attachment to Scott, one that Professor Xavier immediately picked up on. It was around this time when he was getting to know Scott again that his powers surfaced once more, and he was invited to join Xaviers’ school, both as a means of instruction in how to use his powers, and as a means through which to contain them. To protect those around him, Alex had to wear a specially designed suit at all times to help regulate his powers for several years before he could risk going without it for any extended time. At present, Alex only wears such a suit when going into battle, but even then it is no longer a necessity so much as a means though which to better focus his abilities.
Alex has begun to work toward the final stretch toward his doctorate degree, while balancing his responsibilities with the X-Men.
Recently Alex was recruited by Professor Xavier, along with Rachel Summers, Nightcrawler, James Proudstar, Darwin, and Lorna Dane to participate in a space mission to stop his brother Gabriel from unleashing his powers upon the Shi'ar Empire. During a rapidly escalating course of events, Alex saw Gabriel kill his father first hand, as well as becoming the new Emperor of the Shi'ar after obliterating D'Ken. In the midst of the fighting, Xavier, Nightcrawler, Warpath, and Darwin were separated, eventually being transported back to earth as Lilandra sought to protect Xavier.
In the wake of his father's death, and the looming threat Gabriel now embodied to the whole galaxy as Emperor of the Shi'ar, Alex decided to stay in space alongside Lorna and Rachel. Together, they joined the Starjammers in an effort to deal permanently with Gabriel, leading the resistance against him.
Utilizing guerilla warfare, Alex and the Starjammers gradually whittled away at the forces loyal to Gabriel, while strengthening those on the side of Lilandra. The Shi'ar civil war took an unexpected turn when in the middle of a battle Gabriel's forces were ambushed by the Scy`ar Tal, who destroyed his ship, the Hammer. In the resulting tumult, Alex agreed to a temporary ceasefire with Gabriel when it became apparent that the Scy`ar Tal presented an even greater immediate threat to the galaxy.
Working together for what would ultimately be the first and last time, Alex and Gabriel went to take out Finality, the ultimate weapon of the Scy`ar Tal. The Eldest Scy'ar moved to stop the brothers, and it was not until Alex guessed the source of his power and told Gabriel how to sever him from it that they were able to defeat him. Once the Eldest Scy'ar became seperated from his brothers, who had been the source of his strength, the Scy'ar Tal became unorganized, shifting the tide to the Shi'ar. Almost immediately, the Shi'ar attacked the Starjammers, while Gabriel blasted Alex into a sun. At that point, Gabriel intended to use Finality to place a star in the middle of the Scy'ar fleet and Lilandra's resistance, but Alex returned before he could. Powered by his absorption of energy from the sun Gabriel had thrown him into, Alex was able to overwhelm and burn his brother. As Alex stood ready to deliver a death blow to his brother and end his reign of terror, the Imperial Guard arrived on the scene, with the Starjammers in captivity. Unable to face what would be the execution of his friends, and especially Lorna, Alex surrendered, but not before using his powers to destroy Finality.
With the exception of Korvus and Rachel, the Starjammers were taken into custody in an underwater prison. Alex was tortured daily, both physically and from having to hear the screams of Lorna. Somehow, Alex managed to remain resolute and defiant, even when he was told that all of his team mates were dead, and that their blood was upon his hands. Though powerless to do anything initially, he slowly absorbed energy in the fleeting moments he was exposed to light, until he had enough to kill his guards and escape to liberate his team mates.
Free once more, Alex leads the Starjammers in an attempt to thwart the expansion of the Shi'ar Empire under Gabriel, but ultimately fail. It was at this point that Alex decided to join the Kree, who were now ruled by the Inhumans, and coming into contact with the Shi'ar. A war violent war broke out that only ended when the Gabriel and Black Bolt, the respective kings of each side, seemingly perished in an explosion that ripped a hole in the very fabric of time and space.
Though the Starjammers under Alex are no longer in open warfare, their situation is no less dire, as they are now working with the Guardians of the Galaxy to repair hole in time and space before it expands any more. Unfortunately in trying to combat this problem, Alex found himself in an entirely new place, where various universes and realities seem to have merged together into one.
Powers: Ambient Energy Conversion: Alex absorbs ambient cosmic energy into the cells of his body and processes it into plasma. This results in control over an extremely powerful sort of destructive force. At times he is not entirely able to control this ability, which sometimes makes him a danger to those around him unless he wears a special costume to assist him. Alex’s body is constantly in the process of absorbing cosmic radiation. When each of his body’s power-storage cell enclaves reaches its capacity, excess cosmic energy is thereafter absorbed and immediately re-emitted in negligible quantities. Upon the total expenditure of all his available energy, it takes Alex’s body about 16 ½ hours to recharge to its peak level unless he absorbs a large amount of energy at once. The act of concentration involved in releasing his energy in anything other than an omni-directional wave is physically exhausting for Alex if he continues it over an extended period of time. He can absorb cosmic energies from his environment (such as starlight, x-rays, and gamma radiation) and store them within his body cells, metabolizing the energy in order to generate plasma wave discharges that super-heat and disintegrate objects or create concussion bursts by violently displacing air molecules in his path. His ability to absorb energy is so great that he was able to survive being dropped into a large Star, and use it's energy to augment his powers to the point he easily overpowered and beat the likes of Vulcan.
Plasma Emanation: Ability to shoot or emanate plasma in the form of a blast or discharge, with a tell-tale concentric circle pattern. These waves will emanate from his body in all directions unless he purposefully tries to channel them in a single direction, usually along the length of his arms. This results in control over an extremely powerful sort of destructive force. When Alex strikes an object with the waves of intensity of hot plasma, the sudden vast jump in temperature will often cause objects to shatter, explode, or seemingly disintegrate. Should Alex direct his energy at the lowest level, he can project it towards a human being and his target will suffer a severe headache but will not burn up.
Flight: Alex can also use stored energy for flight by directing it as a downward thrust.
Heat Immunity: Alex is virtually immune to the effects of most forms of heat.
Radiation Immunity: Alex is virtually immune to the effects of most forms of radiation.
Abilities: Alex is well-educated in the field of geophysical science where he has earned a masters degree and completed some doctoral work, and he has been trained in hand-to-hand combat and martial arts by Wolverine. He is an instinctive tactician and strategist.
Weakness: Uncontrolled Ambient Energy Conversion: At times, he is not entirely able to control this ability, which sometimes makes him a danger to those around him unless he wears a special containment suit to assist him. This may also be due to psychological trauma similar to his brother.
Genetic Flaw: Havok is not immune to Vulcan's powers, but is partially resistant to it by way of his ability to absorb energy. Havok is immune to Cyclops' optic blasts as Cyclops is immune to his powers.
Additionally, in spite of Alex being a good leader, he has often been plagued with self-doubt, continually comparing himself to Scott and Professor Xavier. Though courageous in battle, he has also had a terrible tendency of leaving notes for people to avoid verbal confrontations with loved ones.
